Themen im Geschäftsfeld Photovoltaik

Wir forschen und entwickeln in folgenden Themenfeldern

Die Photovoltaik ist eine tragende Säule für die Energieversorgung der Zukunft, wie die jüngste Studie zur Entwicklung des deutschen Energiesystems des Fraunhofer ISE belegt. Seit vierzig Jahren leistet das Fraunhofer ISE einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Steigerung des Wirkungsgrads von Solarzellen, der Zuverlässigkeit von PV-Modulen und -Kraftwerken sowie zur Weiterentwicklung nachhaltiger und kostengünstiger Produktionsprozesse für Zellen und Module. Es ist Forschungspartner der europäischen Solarindustrie entlang der gesamten PV-Wertschöpfungskette. Solarstrom ist heute in weiten Teilen der Welt die kostengünstigste Form der Energiebereitstellung, das Potenzial der Technologie ist jedoch noch nicht ausgereizt. 

Wir freuen uns, dass wir mit dem »Zentrum für höchsteffiziente Solarzellen« unsere Infrastruktur mit Blick auf die künftigen technologischen Herausforderungen ausweiten können. Unser Dank für die Finanzierung dieses neuen Gebäudes mit 1000 m2 modernster Laborfläche und Reinraumausstattung gilt dem Bundesforschungsministerium sowie dem Land Baden-Württemberg. Neben der Weiterentwicklung der Silicium- sowie der III-V-Mehrfachsolarzellen liegt ein Fokus des neuen Zentrums auf dem vielversprechenden Ansatz der Si- basierten Tandem-Photovoltaik. Dabei werden Solarzellenmaterialien mit unterschiedlichen elektronischen Eigenschaften wie III-V-Halbleiter, Perowskite oder Silicium zusammengeführt. Das breitbandige Sonnenspektrum kann so bei der Umwandlung von Licht in elektrische Energie noch effizienter genutzt und die theoretische Wirkungsgradgrenze von konventionellen Solarzellen aus nur einem Solarzellenmaterial durchbrochen werden. Dies führt zu Einsparpotenzialen bei Solarzellen- und Modulmaterialien und trägt damit zur Nachhaltigkeit der Photovoltaik  bei. Zudem wird der Einsatz höchsteffizienter Tandemsolarzellen die für den PV-Ausbau benötigte Fläche reduzieren. Dies gilt insbesondere für ihren Einsatz in der Integrierten Photovoltaik, also der Anwendung von PV-Modulen in bereits genutzten und bebauten Flächen, wie  beispielsweise Gebäude- und Fahrzeughüllen. Der für Deutschland zum Erreichen der Klimaschutzziele erforderliche Photovoltaik-Ausbau um das Zehnfache von heute erfordert effiziente und nachhaltige Technologien.

Die leistungsfähigen Tandemzellen stellen höchste Ansprüche an die Serienverschaltung und Einkapselung, um langlebige und sichere Module herzustellen. Die industriellen Prozessplattformen in unserem Module-TEC haben wir an diese Anforderungen angepasst. Dazu haben wir  verschiedene Niedertemperatur-Verbindungstechnologien implementiert, die zugleich modulseitige Leistungsverluste weitgehend eliminieren. 

Ressourcenschonende Produktionstechnologie spielt neben der Effizienzsteigerung eine immer bedeutendere Rolle. Aus dem Bereich der Photovoltaik-Produktionstechnologie ging die Ausgründung HighLine Technology GmbH hervor. Ziel des Start-ups ist, ein am Institut entwickeltes neues Verfahren zu kommerzialisieren, bei dem die Metallkontakte auf der Solarzellenvorderseite kontaktlos in einem Dispensverfahren aufgebracht werden. Dies spart Ressourcen, erhöht die Stromausbeute und reduziert die Kosten. 

Über die Technologieentwicklung hinaus engagiert sich das Fraunhofer ISE auch im Kontext der Wiederbelebung der europäischen Solarindustrie, um die Technologiesouveränität in Europa zu erhalten. So unterstützt das Institut beispielsweise das Bündnis »Solar Europe Now«, das die Anerkennung der Solarenergie als Schlüsseltechnologie für die Zielstellungen im Rahmen des europäischen Green Deals fordert.
