Fraunhofer ISE conducts research and development using laboratory- and pilot-scale facilities. In some cases, hazardous substances such as arsine, phosphine, and hydrofluoric acid are used in these processes. Due to the presence of hazardous substances, the institute is subject to the requirements of the Major Accidents Ordinance for lower-tier establishments. Consequently, a notification was submitted to the Freiburg Regional Council (Regierungspräsidium Freiburg), as the competent authority, in accordance with Section 7 of the Major Accidents Ordinance. The establishment includes all Fraunhofer ISE properties surrounding the Heidenhofstrasse 2 site. The most recent on-site inspection by the Freiburg Regional Council took place on December 11, 2025. Fraunhofer ISE maintains a comprehensive safety management system. Our facilities are structurally and technically designed in such a way to prevent the release of hazardous substances. Our employees receive regular training in the handling of hazardous substances. Maintenance and inspections of the facilities are carried out in accordance with statutory deadlines and requirements. An on-call service is available outside of regular working hours.
