Life-Cycle-Assessment

Life-cycle-assessment (LCA) plays an important role in technology development and development support at Fraunhofer ISE. We combine our technological expertise in the field of heating and cooling technology with methodological competence in sustainability assessment.

The production, operation, and disposal of heat pumps and their components generate an “ecological footprint.” Our goal is to keep this as small as possible. Our R&D services therefore focus on evaluating emissions from operation, the ecological advantages of innovative product designs, and comparisons with other heating systems.

For our assessments, we use the life-cycle-assessment method in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, focusing on supporting technological developments to ensure their benefits in terms of ecology and resource efficiency.

We are happy to support your technological developments and production processes with life cycle assessments, analyses of resource criticality, and the development of concepts to increase the recyclability of your products. Thanks to our technological expertise in the field of heating and cooling technology, we not only offer a trained eye on your technologies, but can also draw on our own industry-specific data sets and models for accounting.

Our R&D-Services on the Topic "Life-Cycle-Assessment of Heat Pumps" include:

  • Life-cycle-assessment according to DIN EN ISO 14040/14044 and 14067 for products and components
  • Support in fulfilling legal documentation requirements; collection of necessary data, calculation according to specified requirements, and correct presentation of results (e.g., for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive CSRD or for environmental product declarations)
  • Support for product development in accordance with eco-design
  • Development of sustainable product alternatives (e.g., through design for repair, the use of sustainable materials, or the ecological optimization of production processes)
  • Assessment of resource availability for specific technologies, companies, or industries
