Cross-Sectoral Energy System Modeling and Planning for Communities

We support cities and municipalities in developing implementation plans to achieve their climate goals. Using our tools and methods, we develop tailor-made transformation pathways to an energy system that meets climate goals and fits local needs and opportunities. We then link this transformation pathway to concrete action measures.

Energy system modeling allows future needs to be matched with the potential for various renewable energy sources available in the area. This makes it possible to calculate what a secure energy system based on renewable energies could look like in the municipality in question. The energy requirements for electricity, heating, cooling, and material energy carriers are mapped in the model with high temporal resolution. This determines the optimal installed capacity and time-resolved generation of the various systems. A transformation path also includes the required storage capacity, which can be calculated and evaluated thanks to the high temporal resolution. A higher spatial resolution also allows questions in the section of infrastructure requirements to be answered, which often play a role in the municipal energy transition. Individual network analyses can also be carried out for this purpose, which also play an important role in municipal heat planning. Based on the calculated target energy systems, climate protection measures can be developed that enable the desired energy system to be achieved.
