A decade of solar energy research: Fraunhofer Chile celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Center for Solar Energy Technologies
On April 3, 2025, Fraunhofer Chile celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Center for Solar Energy Technologies (CSET) with a festive event. The research center supports the development of a sustainable solar economy and the energy transition in Chile. The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE was the initiator of the CSET's establishment and has closely cooperated with Chilean partners in various research fields since its inception.

Over the ten years since its founding, the CSET has developed into a prominent and important player within Chile's innovation system. Prof. Dr. Hans-Martin Henning, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, also attended the celebration in Santiago de Chile. Henning, a member of the CSET board, praised the successful collaboration: “After a decade, we see that many topics have proven to be extremely attractive for close cooperation in solar research. In issues such as water treatment, battery manufacturing, and the broad field of hydrogen production, our research cooperation has significantly advanced us, and a variety of projects with Chilean partners and companies have emerged.”
The research of the CSET includes both innovative solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies. The focus is on applied solutions for industry and the public sector, for example, for the utilization of process heat in mining and other industries, implementation of pilot projects in agro-photovoltaics, or the improvement and maintenance of photovoltaic power plants. On the other hand, green hydrogen and derived products such as methanol or dimethyl ether (DME), water treatment and desalination, as well as electromobility, are further important research fields, with a focus on supporting innovative pilot projects and sustainable market implementation.
