Battery Engineering

Under the motto that battery innovation does not only take place in the cell, but that the path to technological maturity lies in the perfect interaction of all components, we have set ourselves the goal of optimizing battery systems along the entire value chain from the cell to the system in the "Battery Engineering" Research Topic.  

Our research and development activities cover numerous topics, such as cell formation, electrical and thermal characterization of cells and modules, electrical, thermal and ageing modelling, module and system construction, temperature control, hardware and software development for battery management systems, safety investigations, as well as the development of innovative test procedures and the necessary test environments.   

With the combination of comprehensive expertise, many years of experience, innovative thinking and a high-quality laboratory environment, we can competently support our customers, such as manufacturers of components, battery modules and systems, storage manufacturers, system integrators, as well as machine and plant manufacturers, in the development of competitive products. We support them from the selection of technology at cell level through to the development of the finished system and its integration into the application.

At Fraunhofer ISE, we benefit from this infrastructure for our research and development activities:

In addition to our research and development in the field of "Battery Engineering", we offer our customers test procedures for 

  • Electrical and thermal characterization of battery cells, modules and systems
  • Battery ageing
  • Determination of critical variables during thermal runaway 
  • Validation of propagation-inhibiting materials 

At Fraunhofer ISE, we have the ideal infrastructure for the test procedures with commercially available test and climatic equipment as well as test benches developed in-house, such as propagation test benches or mobile battery test benches.
