We develop, design and manufacture various system applications for collectors on request. Our applications for providing source temperature for the evaporators of heat pumps and concentrating collectors for higher application temperatures are just two examples of our activities in a broad field of research.

The focus of our expertise is primarily on photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) collectors. We also specialize in air-heating collectors, façade-integrated collectors and concentrating collectors.

We improve concentrating and non-concentrating collectors and develop new product concepts for solar thermal energy. Alternative manufacturing processes and materials offer the opportunity to realize innovative absorber designs. With the bionic FracTherm® process developed by us, it is possible to create channel structures on almost any surface while achieving low pressure losses and a uniform flow. Heat pipes represent a new approach to efficient heat transfer from the absorber to the heat transfer medium.

Multifunctional collectors open up new possibilities on the solar thermal market. For example, we are developing cross-sector collectors with additional functions such as partial transparency, sun protection, glare protection, statics or architectural design options. Photovoltaic-thermal collectors enable simultaneous electricity and heat generation within a single component.

For technology development, we use our expertise in solar cells, module and collector technology as well as thermal and electrical measurement. Solar air collectors are an interesting alternative to water-based systems, which we compare and optimize through measurement and simulation. We also use optical simulations to improve and develop static and tracking concentrating collectors.

R&D-Services

Analysis of the current state, theoretical optimization in simulation, sample development, prototype construction and series production

The aim of our work is to improve existing absorbers, collectors, storage tanks and heat exchangers and to develop new concepts. In order to achieve these goals, we support our customers from the analysis of the actual state, through theoretical optimization in simulation, sample development and prototype construction, to the series product. We use physical models for thermal and hydraulic simulation as well as test stands for experimental validation. In the case of photovoltaic-thermal collectors, our cross-divisional expertise enables us to meet the requirements of photovoltaics and solar thermal energy equally and to develop marketable products from this. Prototypes and small series can be spectrally selectively coated at Fraunhofer ISE. Conventional solar thermal absorbers are constructed from absorber plates and tube registers in a meander or harp design. This construction method has been undergoing further development for years and is now largely automated. The materials used are copper and/or aluminum.

Production processes, solar absorber production and new materials

Our research work focuses on production processes, which can often be adopted and adapted from neighboring research areas, as well as new materials such as steel, polymers or ultra-high performance concrete. Production processes such as roll bonding, hydroforming or deep drawing change the duct geometry: individually welded pipes are replaced by ducts with flexible cross-sectional geometries and duct guides. We use models and measurements to analyze how this affects thermal efficiency and pressure loss. With the help of our FracTherm® process, such duct structures, borrowed from nature, can be generated for almost any surface.
