Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg at Fraunhofer ISE

His Royal Highness, The Grand Duke of Luxembourg visited the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE on November 8, 2024. Along with a delegation consisting of politicians and scientists, he was interested to hear about research into integrated photovoltaics and hydrogen technology. The delegation included Stéphanie Obertin, Luxembourg’s Minister for Digitization and Minister for Higher Education and Research, and Her Excellency, Sylvie Lucas, Luxembourg’s Ambassador to Germany.

His Royal Highness, The Grand Duke of Luxembourg visited the Fraunhofer ISEalong with a delegation consisting of politicians and scientists.

While touring Europe’s largest solar research institute, the Head of State and his delegation were briefed on current research focusses aimed at tackling the various challenges of the energy transition. A highlight of the tour was integrated photovoltaics – harnessing solar power from surfaces that serve a dual purpose. Floating photovoltaics, agrivoltaics combining farmland with electricity generation, and PV systems integrated into building facades – all of these solutions help deploy solar energy systems without consuming extra land.

Another key focus of the tour was exploring the role of hydrogen in achieving a zero-carbon energy system. The discussion on a potential international hydrogen economy touched upon topics such as the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, import-export pathways, and the various use cases for green hydrogen.  “Our study Paths to a Climate-Neutral Energy System demonstrated that alongside imports, creating a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure significantly supports the development of a holistic energy system,” explained institute director Andreas Bett during the visit. Fraunhofer ISE is currently exploring the specifics of a proposed hydrogen infrastructure, identifying in which regions around the world the production of hydrogen is most efficient, and envisioning an import strategy for Europe.
