Data-Driven Operations Management for Cross-Sector Energy Facilities

Fraunhofer ISE offers comprehensive expertise for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In light of rising energy costs and the ongoing electrification of heating systems and vehicle fleets, topics such as PV-battery systems, commercial energy storage, and active load control are becoming increasingly important.

Our service portfolio includes the modeling of complex business structures, particularly in the commercial, retail, and service sectors (CRS), while also taking future loads into account. Using our simulation models, we are able to precisely map and optimize the operational management and interaction of energy storage systems, heat pumps, battery electric vehicles, and other controllable and uncontrollable consumers and generators.

Our Core Competencies Include:

  • Operational Management and Interaction: We analyze and optimize the operational management of storage systems, heat pumps, electric vehicles, and other energy consumers and generators to ensure efficient and cost-effective use.
  • Battery system design: With our software NRGISE.ONE we assist with the optimal sizing of battery systems to maximize their performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Techno-economic analyses of various energy-related use cases, including:
    • Peak load shaving: Optimization to reduce power prices and atypical grid usage.
    • Self-consumption optimization: Increasing the self-consumption rate through intelligent control and integration of PV systems.
    • Interaction with the power grid: Analysis and optimization of the use of dynamic electricity rates to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
    • Multi-use / Revenue Stacking: Combining various use cases to maximize cost-effectiveness and flexibility.

Our customized solutions and in-depth analyses help companies reduce their energy costs while contributing to the energy transition. With our expertise, we support SMEs on their path toward a sustainable and efficient energy future.

Our R&D Services in this Field Include:

  • Simulation studies on current and future load profiles and the economic viability of assets such as battery storage systems and PV installations
  • Development of innovative forecasting and operational management algorithms for peak load shaving, self-consumption optimization, and multi-use
  • Decision support regarding investment options (battery storage, charging infrastructure, etc.) and corporate decarbonization
