Safety for Flammable Refrigerants

In the transition to sustainable natural refrigerants, the focus is on hydrocarbons such as propane (R290) in particular due to their outstanding thermodynamic and economic advantages. However, these refrigerants are flammable and therefore require special safety measures. We are researching the fundamentals and developing solutions for heat pumps or stationary and mobile refrigeration applications. Our aim is to minimize the risks and fully exploit the benefits of these refrigerants.

Release measurements of flammable refrigerants for both indoor and outdoor installation are an important part of our work. Through precise measurements and analyses, we investigate the behavior of refrigerants in the event of unforeseen releases and evaluate appropriate safety measures. These can be carried out in conjunction with certifications for market launch or at an early stage as part of development projects.

We offer comprehensive research and development services. Our team provides support in the development of safety concepts and carries out basic investigations. In close cooperation with industry partners, we develop customized solutions for the safe handling of flammable refrigerants.

Our R&D Services on the Topic "Saftey for Flammable Refrigerants" Include:

  • Carrying out release measurements for outdoor installed heat pumps with flammable refrigerants (in particular leakage simulation and zone determination tests according to national and international standards)
  • Carrying out release measurements for indoor mounted heat pumps with flammable refrigerants
  • Determination of releasable quantities (releasable charge)
  • Development support on specific topics, such as enclosure concepts, active sensor-based safety concepts or various passive concepts
  • Safety concepts for mobile and industrial applications
