Hydrogen Mobility

Hydrogen can power fuel cell vehicles directly in fuel cells or internal combustion engines, or be further processed into sustainable liquid fuels – and is particularly well-suited for use in high-performance powertrains. The advantages in each case include short refueling times with a molecular energy carrier and long vehicle ranges due to the fuel’s high energy density. The use of existing refueling station infrastructure and fuel logistics is economically attractive and its independence from the regional and local power system helps to stabilize the power grid. An important aspect is that global trade in renewable energy will only become possible with the help of hydrogen and its derivatives. This means that regions around the world with high potential for solar and wind energy can be utilized for fuel production. Our systemic analyses show that these concepts will be technologically and economically competitive.
