Integrated Planning and Control of Storage Systems – NRGISE.ONE

© Fraunhofer ISE

A storage-based energy system is understood to mean the use of one or more storage systems in an electrical supply structure consisting of generators and consumers. Efficient planning and control of such energy systems requires tools that minimize the economic costs of installation and operation of the systems involved. With this in mind, the Fraunhofer ISE developed the product suite NRGISE.ONE, which enables planners and operators to integrate storage systems into supply structures in an economically optimized way, both “behind the meter” and “front of the meter”. This includes the following products:

  • NRGISE.plan: A web application for planning storage-based energy systems that provides detailed system models and AI-based methods for the economically optimized design of the individual components (storage, PV system, heat pump, etc.).
  • NRGISE.plan Free: A reduced open source version of the planning software that allows scientists to develop new plant models and optimization methods for research purposes
  • NRGISE.control: An energy management system for controlling storage-based energy systems, which is based on the same models and optimization algorithms as NRGISE.plan.

Compared to the current state of the art, the following added value is provided by the NRGISE.plan and NRGISE.control products:

  • Integrated planning and control: Both products use the same plant models and AI-based algorithms for economically optimized planning and control of storage-based energy systems, so that consistent results are achieved in terms of the projected and actual economic yields generated in the field during project planning and in the field.
  • Multi-use: Both NRGISE.plan and NRGISE.control support the multi-use of storage systems, so that several applications such as peak shaving, PV self-consumption optimization or arbitrage can be combined to maximize the return on investment.
  • Realistic models: The plant models used for planning and control are based on detailed measurement data from real systems in order to realistically model key properties such as storage aging and to enable correct calculations in both processes.
  • User-Centered Design: Both products are developed in the sense of a user-centered design, i.e. in a close iterative exchange with the target users, in order to create a user-friendly and accessible solution that meets the real requirements of the users. The overarching design principle here is to resolve the inherent complexity of the energy domain by maximizing the automation of the associated processes.

The products NRGISE.plan and NRGISE.control are made available to users via corresponding license models. Please contact us if you are interested.
