Sustainable Synthesis Products

Fraunhofer ISE has been working in the field of sustainable synthesis products for over 25 years. We cover the entire process chain of sustainable synthesis products: from green hydrogen, the direct air capture of CO2 and the synthesis of Power-to-X (PtX) products (such as ammonia, dimethyl ether, methanol) to conversion and end applications. We develop and optimize processes and reactor concepts for the production of PtX products and for thermochemical hydrogen production from PtX products. We develop, test and characterize tailor-made catalysts.

Fields of Work

In the research topic "Sustainable Synthesis Products" we focus on the following fields of work:

Production of Sustainable Synthesis Products

Hydrogen Production from Sustainable Synthesis Products

CO2 Direct Air Capture

We offer:

  • Process development and optimization for the production of fuels, chemicals and energy sources such as ammonia, methanol, dimethyl ether (DME), oxymethylene ether (OME) and aviation fuels based on H2/CO2/CO or H2/N2 (Power to Liquids, PtL)
  • Development of processes for thermochemical hydrogen production and new reactor concepts for sustainable synthesis products (e.g. ammonia, dimethyl ether, methanol, biofuels, e-fuels)
  • Design, testing and characterization of catalysts using in-situ and ex-situ analysis for hydrogen-based synthesis products and direct air capture (DAC) processes
  • NAP-XPS measurements of fresh and aged catalysts, in-situ measurements with gas mixtures at different catalyst temperatures
  • In-house design, construction, programming and operation of fully automated, remotely operated mini and pilot plants for PtL production and thermochemical hydrogen production
  • The CatVap® fuel preparation technology developed and patented by Fraunhofer ISE, to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines
  • Precise process simulations of use cases for hydrogen-based synthesis products, using Aspen, to provide insights into catalytic process design and operation for the optimization of thermochemical processes
  • Techno-economic feasibility studies and life cycle assessments to evaluate the potential of the hydrogen supply chain for your business case

R&D Infrastructure

In our laboratories, we use miniplants to develop, test and optimize processes for the synthesis of PtX products, the production of thermochemical hydrogen and for direct air capturing (DAC). We test prototypes and characterize surfaces and materials along the hydrogen value chain using NAP-XPS. Our research and development activities make use of the laboratories for sustainable synthesis products at Fraunhofer ISE.
