Agent-Based Energy Management in Urban Districts

In a distributed energy landscape with a large number of controllable loads and generators, we develop individual energy agents that are tailored to the requirements of the respective plant translate user-specific goals into control commands. Agents operate independently without a central control authority in order to optimize the operation of the individual plant and, in communication with other agents, the larger plant network. Our energy management systems are used in the implementation of tenant electricity and neighborhood projects. We examine in detail future load profiles and control concepts that help to avoid the expansion of power grids. In addition to optimizing the electrical system, we are working on sector coupling for mobility, heating, and cooling. In current research projects, we are demonstrating what local renewable energy communities could look like in the future, thereby making an important contribution to the transition to a decentralized energy supply in the hands of citizens.
