In order to achieve the Paris climate protection target of net zero emissions in the second half of this century, an unprecedented transformation of the energy supply towards renewable energies (RE) is required in all sectors worldwide.
In the target countries of this project, Indonesia, Argentina and Kenya, the potential of RE has so far been insufficiently utilized and the existing national framework conditions are not yet sufficient to increase the share of RE.
This project therefore supports cities and regions in these countries in developing strategies for 100% RE supply and in raising awareness and commitment among stakeholders. At the same time, it supports the assessment of local RE potential and the development of eligible projects for the expansion of RE. The project thus provides tools and resources for a RE-based energy supply.
In each country, one project city/region is designated as a lighthouse city/region (deep-dive cities/regions). This city/region will receive comprehensive support in building knowledge and skills as well as consulting services to develop and implement its local strategy for 100 percent RE. The other two cities/regions will be included as so-called network cities/regions in the exchange of experience, knowledge building, peer learning and policy dialog.
Fraunhofer ISE's task in the project is to use the KomMod energy system model to calculate optimized 100 % RE scenarios for all deep-dive regions/cities, including all relevant demand sectors. The target year for the scenarios is 2050, the latest year by which 100% RE should be achieved. Several possible energy systems are proposed in which renewables cover all relevant local energy demand to show how an energy supply based exclusively on renewables could be achieved.
Based on these scenarios, pathways for the transformation of the energy system and recommendations for action for the transformation were developed for the deep-dive cities as part of the 100% RE project. The 100% RE scenarios developed are the result of intensive collaboration between Fraunhofer ISE, ICLEI and local stakeholders. In an iterative process, the scenarios were discussed with local stakeholders in order to develop a common understanding of sensible target scenarios for an energy supply based 100% on renewable energies.
