As part of the “FoFeBat” project, a research production facility for battery cells is being set up. This covers all production steps from mixing the electrode materials to forming the cells. In sub-project 1, Fraunhofer ISE is supporting the development of research production in areas such as forming and end-of-line quality assurance as well as in the fields of energy-efficient building operation management, dry room design and the techno-economic evaluation of operating scenarios.

In sub-project 2, Fraunhofer ISE is involved in technology screening for future innovation modules and the development of the pipeline process for their implementation.

In sub-project 3, Fraunhofer ISE is planning and setting up a mini-environment test stand that will enable investigations into optimized air flow and energy-optimized operation.

Since the end of 2019, the Fraunhofer IPT has been setting up battery cell research production in Münster. The focus of battery cell research production is on researching innovative production technologies for battery cells in round, pouch and prismatic cell formats. One of the main objectives of battery cell research production is to reduce the risks involved in transferring innovative cell concepts and production technologies to large-scale production.

Research focuses on the flexible and adaptable design of the production system as well as the development and testing of digitalization solutions. The aim is to enable a shift away from rigid production lines towards modular production.

In addition to the activities for modularization and digitalization of the entire value chain, the reduction of the environmental impact of battery cell production is a central planning objective of battery cell research production. This is to be achieved primarily through high energy and resource efficiency on the building and production side as well as through the use of renewable energies. To increase the proportion of self-generated energy, energy demand and energy supply are to be synchronized and energy flexibility measures implemented.

ISE is particularly involved in advising on and testing the technical parameters of buildings and systems. Another focus is on support in the area of characterization for quality assurance of battery cells in the production process and general safety issues. ISE is also supporting the project by calculating the total cost of ownership for various production scenarios
