Fraunhofer ISE Investigates Power Supply Concept for Mobile Data Centers

November 21, 2017

Mining cryptocoins requires an inexpensive energy supply. To this end, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is investigating possible energy supply concepts for the mobile data centers in the German energy system.

Besides supply structures, markets and prices, the complex regulations in the electric supply system play a central role. In the investigation ,particular focus is placed on both the mobility and flexibility of the load to be met. Independent of the results, the mobile data centers can be seasonally operated by different power plants, or the data centers can change their location depending on changed boundary conditions. A current project deals with mobile data centers in ship containers. These are used by the project partner Envion AG for mining cryptocurrency such as the bitcoin.
