Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christof Wittwer

Director, Business Division Power Electronics, Grids and Smart Systems, Division Energy Technology and Systems

Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christof Wittwer is Director of the Division Power Electronics, Grids and Smart Systems at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg, Germany and Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, University Freiburg.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christof Wittwer studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Kaiserslautern and joined Fraunhofer ISE in 1993. Between 1996 and 1999 he was research associate at the University of Karlsruhe, he obtained his PhD in 1999 with his thesis „ColSim – A Modular Simulation Environment for the Development of Control Algorithms for Embedded Systems in Energy Supply Systems“.

Following years Christof Wittwer returned as “post-doc” to Fraunhofer ISE, where he coordinated projects in the area of networked control systems for decentralized fuel cell systems. In 2003 he was head of  group „Operations Management and System Control“ with growing team. In 2010 he obtained the department “decentralized energy systems and grid integration”. In 2019 Christof Wittwer was appointed Director, Business Division „Power Electronics, Grids and Smart Systems" and is therefore responsible for around 80 scientific employers.

Since 2008 Christof Wittwer has been a lecturer at the University of Freiburg, Department of Environment and Natural Resources. In 2014 the University of Freiburg appointed him Honorary Professor. In teaching he is responsible for the Master’s degree program „Renewable Energy Engineering and Management“.
