Press Release #19

“Sustainability Summit” in Freiburg from October 13-14, 2014 – Former Solar Energy Conference Expands its Horizon

In terms of sustainability, the City of Freiburg in Breisgau holds a leading role internationally. Also within Freiburg’s research scene, sustainability topics form a connective link between the research at the five local Fraunhofer institutes, with over 2000 employees, and between their work with the University of Freiburg, with whom they cooperate. Sustainability in Freiburg involves both the sciences and social sciences and emphasizes that the transformation to a sustainable lifestyle not only requires technological solutions but also public acceptance and suitable legal and economic boundary conditions.

Against this background, the “Sustainabilitiy Summit” is to be held in the “Konzerthaus Freiburg” from 13th to the 14th of October 2014. The conference’s origins are found in the “Solar Summit”, an annual event in Freiburg since 2008. In its new form, it addresses a much broader range of topics.

With the new concept, the five Fraunhofer institutes together with the University of Freiburg aim to offer a broader picture of energy efficiency and renewable energy supply and to take a look beyond at other sustainability topics of the future. On October 13-14, 2014, the focus will be on topics such as the development and use of sustainable materials for automobile manufacturing and aerospace or society’s resistance to natural disasters and climate change. Renewable energies with the focus on solar energy will continue to be a thematic concentration of the “Sustainability Summit.” In the coming years, this conference is expected to become a showcase for the excellent research that is being carried out in Freiburg in the field of sustainability.
