The transformation to a renewable-based energy system with the concurrent introduction of electric vehicles poses both a challenge and a chance.
Electric vehicle charging will have an increasing influence on the stability of the electricity grid, leading to greater demands on the connectivity and controllability of the charging system. On the other hand, the power electronics and the batteries in the vehicle can be used lucratively to provide grid services. Demands on the future grid and new business models on the electricity market are presently being discussed intensively and plans are being laid for the future.
To integrate electric vehicles into the grid or building energy system in an intelligent and sustainable manner, either an autonomous or centralized control system for charging/discharging is meaningful. Any leeway occurring during charging/discharging can be used to optimize economic or ecological aspects. Our scientists and engineers optimize both hardware and software for communicating with the charging systems as well as develop and optimize algorithms for demand-based charging and provide grid services. We offer simulations for grid solutions and technical concepts as well as economic valuations. To carry these out, we use our state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure in the SmartEnergyLab. Besides concepts and analyses, we have also developed a modular platform for charging systems, which allows us to quickly and effectively create innovative systems that can be operated as pilot systems in the field.
