Testing of PV home storages according to the BVES / BSW efficiency guide (Bundesverband Energiespeicher, Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft) in the laboratory of Fraunhofer ISE.

Storing the energy generated by the photovoltaic panels is becoming increasingly cheaper. More and more providers of PV home storages share a rapidly growing market: A variety of storage models is available. But do the values from the data sheet correspond to reality? Does the storage system keeps the promise of the manufacturer? Which safety measures are included in the storage? What is the actual efficiency of the system and will it cope with the predicted cycles? Fraunhofer ISE helps to capture the topics of security and efficiency of storages with high quality. According to the BVES guidelines for PV home storage systems, we test systems holistically. In our modern laboratories several storage systems can be tested simultaneously in HIL test benches (Hardware-in-the-Loop). In long-term tests, we carry out aging tests which are performed with realistic high-resolution load profiles at reproducible adjustable climate conditions.

Industrial and Commercial Storage

Large storage systems are increasingly being used, making them an important element in implementing the energy revolution. In industrial properties, such storage systems in combination with energy management systems can help to reduce energy costs and avoid peaks in the electric power consumption. In conjunction with solar or wind power plants, availability can be increased and grid services can be provided at the same time. These storages must be integrated into an existing infrastructure and controlled. Fraunhofer ISE tests industrial battery systems at cell level, module level and system level with regard to efficiency, aging and safety. Our laboratories are also equipped for high power storages (up to 250kW). We develop solutions and software for the control and integration of storage systems for special and innovative applications, e.g. for the supply of direct current networks and electrical charging stations, and take a holistic approach to the integration of storage systemsin projects.

Our R&D services in this field of work include:

  • Testing of battery cells, modules and systems with regard to safety, efficiency and aging
  • Optimization of the management of storages
  • Design and advice
  • Integration of storage systems in individual projects
