Electrolysis and Hydrogen Infrastructure

The production of hydrogen in water electrolyzers is a clean and efficient process that requires only water and electricity. If the hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity, we have a sustainable energy carrier for storing renewable energy.

Fraunhofer ISE has been working on electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen for over 30 years. We develop components and systems, integrate electrolyzers into the energy system and carry out sustainability and life cycle analyses. We focus on electrolysis with proton-exchange membranes (PEM) and anion-exchange membranes (AEM). Our broad expertise can support you in your electrolysis projects!

R&D Infrastructure

Our research and development activities make use of the excellent infrastructure at Fraunhofer ISE:

Elektrolysis Lab

We characterize and analyse electrolysis materials, cells and entire stacks. We support the upscaling of electrolyzers using state-of-the-art components and production research for the membrane electrode assembly.

Hydrogen Refueling Station

As a research platform, we offer the refueling station for component and sensor tests in real operation, the investigation of operating processes and concept development.

H2ProSim

Our simulation toolbox “H2ProSim” (Hydrogen Process Simulation) is used for the model-based, techno-economic evaluation of hydrogen plants and Power-to-X products, up to complete hydrogen supply chains.
