WP-Quali-FR

Integration of Heat Pumps in Existing Buildings with a Focus on Craftsmen

Duration: 01/2023 - 12/2024
Contracting Authority/Sponsors:
Stadt Freiburg
Project Partners: Stadt Freiburg (Umweltschutzamt), SHK-Innung Freiburg-Müllheim Hochschwarzwald, Handwerkskammer Freiburg, Bundesverband Wärmepumpen (BWP) e.V.
Project Focus:

The piping for the installation of a heat pump is often more extensive than for gas boiler systems, since, for example, storages have to be installed as well. This lengthens the installation times. The aim of the project is to identify such »time guzzlers« and develop efficient solutions for SHK companies.

In the project » Integration of heat pumps in existing buildings with a focus on craftsmen«, Fraunhofer ISE, on behalf of the City of Freiburg and financed by the Zukunftsfonds Klimaschutz (Future Fund for Climate Protection), is supporting six companies from the sanitary, heating and cooling trades in Freiburg and the surrounding area in the installation and planning of heat pumps. Fraunhofer ISE staff documents the processes and then compares the process descriptions with each other to derive best practice methods. These findings will then be disseminated through the communication channels of the project partners.

The installation of heat pumps in existing buildings plays a crucial role in achieving climate targets. However, the installation of the equipment is still a challenge for many companies, as they lack experience and know-how. In a joint project of the City of Freiburg and Fraunhofer ISE in cooperation with the SHK Guild Freiburg-Müllheim Hochschwarzwald, the Freiburg Chamber of Crafts and the Bundesverband Wärmpumpen e. V., time-consuming and inhibiting aspects of heat pump installation are to be identified and potential for standardization and acceleration derived.  The findings are then to be communicated.

As part of the project, Fraunhofer ISE is supporting six HVAC companies in Freiburg and the surrounding area in the installation and planning of heat pumps. The processes are documented by Fraunhofer ISE staff. The process descriptions are then compared with each other in order to derive best practice methods. These findings are then discussed and evaluated with the participating companies.

After the exchange, the results will also be made available to a wider audience via the communication channels of the partners, so that in particular companies that have not yet gained much experience with the installation of heat pumps can get a quick start and benefit from the best practices of experienced companies.

Der Wärmpumpeneinbau im Bestand steht im Fokus des Projekts »WP-Quali-FR«. Vorab müssen in der Regel zunächst alte Gas- oder Ölkessel (wie hier) demontiert werden.

The installation of heat pumps in existing buildings is the focus of the »WP-Quali-FR« project. As a rule, old gas or oil boilers (as shown here) must first be dismantled.

In the case of a roof installation, the outdoor unit is transported by crane. This is a variant of heat pump installation that is becoming increasingly common - especially for terraced houses - and was also used at one of the accompanied construction sites.
