With the market ramp-up of electromobility, the demand for charging infrastructures is growing rapidly. The young industry already has more than 50 providers and offers several hundred charging (so called wallboxes) solutions. The primary goal of the »Wallbox Inspektion« project is to develop new procedures for evaluating the quality of uni- and bidirectional charging solutions for private electric vehicles and to establish them as an industry standard. The core of the test procedures is a quality comparison including the evaluation of efficiency and control quality for smart solar charging and regeneration (»Vehicle to Home« - V2H).

The wallbox energy management solutions provided by the industry advisory board as well as additional products available on the market will be tested under identical and realistic operating conditions in the Digital Grid Lab of Fraunhofer ISE.

Parallels to stationary battery storage systems can be identified in the development of charging stations. Experience from the energy storage industry indicates that there are large quality differences in the market before the establishment of a uniform test procedure such as the safety or efficiency guide.

In the »Wallbox Inspektion« project, the consortium is developing test procedures for solar-optimized controlled and bidirectional ("Vehicle to Home" - V2H) charging. These procedures are discussed and improved together with an industry advisory board. The goal is to develop an industry-wide recognized industry standard with a uniform wallbox score.

The developed test procedures will be implemented in the Digital Grid Lab of Fraunhofer ISE in the existing power hardware-in-the-loop environment. For this purpose, the researchers will extend their digital vehicle twin "ev twin" in the lab to replicate the charging behavior of as many electric vehicles as possible. This also includes the communication between vehicle and charging station according to pilot signal and ISO15118.

In the modern test facility, the charging stations already identified and additional innovative systems procured on the market will be tested. After successful evaluation in the project consortium, the so-called "Wallbox Inspektion" for unidirectional and bidirectional charging solutions will be published. This will be the first time that a transparent comparison of solar-optimized charging solutions for the home sector will be available.
