Power to Liquids Cubes

The Power to Liquid (PtL) concept is based on the conversion of sustainable hydrogen and carbon and nitrogen into fuels such as synthetic gasoline or methanol-based aviation fuels and chemicals as well as energy carriers such as methanol, ammonia or dimethyl ether (DME). Fraunhofer ISE's Power to Liquids Cube at the Hannover Messe clearly depicts various hydrogen-based energy carriers in terms of their relative energy density compared to unpressurized, compressed as well as deep cold liquefied hydrogen.

The Sustainable Synthesis Products department at Fraunhofer ISE offers a wide range of services in the field of thermochemical processes related to the efficient production, global transport and low-emission use of hydrogen and its derivatives. They develop efficient power to liquid processes, perform techno-economic and life cycle analysis (LCA), and synthesize and characterize catalysts. They are currently researching sustainable liquid aviation fuels, innovative processes for ammonia and DME synthesis or reforming, and have developed the fuel treatment technology CatVap® that significantly reduces pollutant emissions - especially those of nitrogen oxides.

The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for heavy-duty applications, which we are exhibiting at Hannover Messe, has catalyst layers produced by screen printing and the MEA was produced via the decal process. Fraunhofer ISE accompanies its clients through the complete process chain from catalyst ink development, catalyst coated membrane (CCM) fabrication to MEA production, including microstructure analysis, state-of-the-art in-situ characterization and modeling of MEAs.

Within the project network »TiKaBe«, Fraunhofer ISE scientists are developing innovative catalyst inks which can be used for various industrial coating processes. Shortening and simplifying the so-called break-in, the initial conditioning of fuel cells, is the focus of the research project »BI-FIT«.

In situ characterization of fuel cells

The Test Fuel Cell reflects 30 years of experience for in situ characterization of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). In doing so, we characterize membrane electrode assemblies with respect to their performance and aging behavior as a function of operating conditions using state-of-the-art electrochemical measurement methods.

Novel half-cell composite for a PEM electrolysis cell, consisting of a porous base element and an inserted joining compound made of elastomer to form the sealing and channel structures.

With the half-cell composite, an advanced design concept is now available for the large-scale mass production of PEM electrolysis cells. Via electrolysis, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen; proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis is characterized by a dynamic mode of operation. For a rapid expansion of the hydrogen economy and for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, technical solutions such as the half-cell composite are required, which reduce the material and manufacturing costs of PEM electrolysers and ensure easy assembly. The scientists in the Electrolysis department at Fraunhofer ISE have been working on various design and production issues related to PEM electrolysis for 30 years.

The half-cell composite was supported as Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence "Integrated Energy Systems".
