New Fraunhofer ISE Spin-off: NEXUS GreenTech Supports Companies in the Photovoltaic Industry

Setting up a manufacturing facility or developing new technologies – NEXUS GreenTech, the new spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, supports manufacturers of wafers, solar cells, and PV modules with issues related to product development and factory planning. The founders, Dr. Jochen Rentsch, Dr. Sebastian Nold, and Dr. Nico Wöhrle previously spent many years researching PV technologies, associated production processes, and quality assurance, and all three were most recently part of the PV Technology Transfer unit at Fraunhofer ISE. The spin-off, founded at the end of March, is headquartered in Freiburg, Germany.

“During our collaboration with PV companies in the field of technology transfer, we repeatedly noticed that many of the inquiries were not about a research question in the strict sense,” explains Dr. Jochen Rentsch. “At the same time, there is a great need for consulting: Which cell technology should I choose, which suppliers are available, which factory layout makes sense – to name just a few issues.”

The spin-off focuses in particular on the following services: technical and commercial due diligence/feasibility studies, (layout) planning for factories, technology consulting and business plan development, support with recruiting and organizational development, as well as investments. Scientific methods are adopted from Fraunhofer ISE through cooperation and licensing agreements.

“We are very pleased that ISE employees are founding the company NEXUS GreenTech and thus advancing the expansion of photovoltaic production worldwide. Fraunhofer ISE is committed to a successful collaboration with this new company,” says Prof. Andreas Bett, Director of Fraunhofer ISE. “While we are losing three key colleagues to our successful photovoltaic technology transfer with the departure of the three founders, NEXUS GreenTech now provides us with a highly competent partner with whom we can expand our range of services for establishing new and expanding existing production facilities for photovoltaic components. Through this partnership, customers can be confident that the latest scientific findings – and, if necessary, more in-depth R&D support – will be incorporated into the project.”

The first major joint project involves supporting the establishment and operation of a TOPCon pilot and production line for the American solar cell manufacturer Talon PV. NEXUS GreenTech’s focus here is on the procurement and planning of the facilities, personnel development issues, the analysis of process data, and the development of R&D partnerships. Fraunhofer ISE operates the pilot line and provides the long-term R&D partnership.
