The topic of Material Research and Optics at Fraunhofer ISE covers methods and research areas which are relevant to many business areas at the institute. In particular, we develop optical-functional coatings for different applications, e.g. high temperature resistant absorber tubes for solar thermal power plants or thermal insulating glazings for buildings. Other functions relate to non-optical properties like antisoiling surface tension modifications or prevention of condensation by low infrared emittance. We also have the possibilities to test and analyze the degradation of multi-layer coatings and surfaces with our advanced characterization equipment like Auger spectroscopy with depth profiling or imaging features.
Fraunhofer ISE has both state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and extensive knowledge in the development, manufacture and characterization of coatings and structures. With our custom-designed pilot equipment, we can produce coatings on various substrates as prototypes and in small batch series as well as fabricate and replicate micro and nanostructures.
