High Power Converters

As generators, storage facilities and loads are increasingly connected to the grid via inverters, we are experiencing a strong transformation of our energy system. Therefore, feed-in inverters must already provide important system services such as local voltage regulation or frequency holding. Our grid-sustaining inverter technology allows to keep the power grid stable even with little or no feed from rotating generators. Using the example of so-called microgrids, we are testing new methods such as voltage and frequency generation or the provision of instantaneous reserve. In addition, new simulation and analysis methods enable us to assess the interactions between inverters and the power grid. New methods, like impedance spectroscopy of inverters, can then be used to apply targeted damping of resonance and harmonic effects.

In today's fast-growing market environment for large inverters, solutions that are well tailored to the respective field of application are becoming a competitive advantage for suppliers. Typical examples of this are modular inverter units for use in PV power plants or battery systems at MW scale. In addition to the development of such components, we also deal with the design of the overall system. We develop innovative concepts and solutions and implement them with our industrial partners in the form of optimizations or new components. For the commissioning and characterization of inverters, the Multi-Megawatt Lab is available to us as part of our Center for Power Electronics and Sustainable Grids.

 

 

Our service facilities in the field of power electronics:

 

 

  • TestLab Power Electronics
    Characterization of inverters, DC/DC converters, uni and bidirectional chargers, module-integrated electronics from the watt to megawatt range.
    The TestLab Power Electronics is accredited by the DAkkS (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle) to investigate inverters up to 1.25 MW according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

In our power electronics laboratory, we offer the following services:

  • From consultations through to hardware and software development for renewable energy systems as well as energy systems in the fields of electric mobility, railway, aviation and industry electronics
  • Support in the selection of semiconductors, component evaluation and dimensioning of customer-specific power electronic modules
  • Simulation and design of inductive components and inductors
  • Development of control technology
  • Programing of DSPs and FPGAs
  • Construction of demonstrators and prototypes
  • Development of high performing analog and digital control circuits for converters with high switching frequencies
  • Characterization of semiconductor components (with discrete components through to semiconductor modules)
  • Testing and characterization of power electronic components and systems
