Fuel Cell

Fuel cells are recommended for applications in emissions-free mobility, such as road traffic, trains, ships and aircraft. The fuel cell components must therefore continually operate reliably and efficiently with high electrochemical stability – even under extreme conditions.

In the "Fuel Cell" research topic, we have been supporting the development of membrane fuel cells in mobile applications since the early 1990s. Our core competencies are ex-situ materials analysis, in-situ characterization, modeling and production research of membrane electrode assemblies. Our in-situ characterization is carried out using single cells and cell stacks.

We support and advise our customers with interdisciplinary know-how and comprehensive services ranging from research to product marketing.

Fields of Work

In the research topic "Fuel Cell" we focus on the following fields of work:

Modeling of Fuel Cells

Characterization of Fuel Cells

Production of Fuel Cells

Fuel Cell Stacks and Systems

We offer:

  • In-situ characterization of the membrane electrode assembly and its individual layers with regard to performance and aging behavior as a function of operation and with regard to contamination effects
  • In-situ characterization of fuel cell stacks with regard to performance and aging behavior as a function of operation using single-cell voltage detection and single-cell impedance spectroscopy
  • Ex-situ analysis of fuel cell components with regard to their microstructures and element distribution before and after aging
  • Modeling of performance and aging behavior from the microscale to the system level
  • Production research in sheet-to-sheet and roll-to-roll processes with variation of materials, composition and process control from catalyst powder to the assembled 7-layer membrane electrode assembly
