Smart Energy Cities, District Concepts and Heat Grids

Due in part to the continuous process of urbanization, towns and communities across the globe are becoming key instigators in developing and implementing sustainable ways of life: many suffer the effects of poor air quality, increasing traffic levels, a lack of housing and growing energy demands. Numerous towns and communities are therefore becoming innovators, setting themselves ambitious sustainability targets and launching pioneering projects.

Fraunhofer ISE analyzes communal strategies for transforming the energy system and offers useful approaches to exploiting local potential.

Urban space is a key area where action can be taken to implement the energy transition. As well as lowering energy demand in buildings by renovating building stock, it is also necessary to transform urban energy supply systems. At Fraunhofer ISE, we develop evaluation and planning methods that assist and support these transformation processes.
