Three-phase PV inverter for use in the laboratory

The modular design allows the most modern circuit topologies and semiconductor modules to be tested efficiently. New control algorithms can be investigated under realistic conditions and optimized using the digital signal processor and extensive measurement data acquisition.

Power electronics is a key technology for the energy supply sector, drive engineering or the automobile industry and plays an especially important role in the transformation of our energy supply system.  Due to continual developments in electronic devices and improved switching concepts, many electronic components today are smaller, lighter, more efficient and cost-effective than their predecessors. With this, larger power ranges up to the multi-megawatt scale open up and totally new functionalities have first become possible.

Fraunhofer ISE develops electronic components and systems for many applications. Our focus lies in converters such as inverters or transformers and the required controls for their implementation in energy supply and transmission systems. Special emphasis is put on optimizing the complete system and achieving the highest energy efficiency.

Our service facilities in the field of power electronics:

  • TestLab Power Electronics
    Characterization of inverters, DC/DC converters, uni and bidirectional chargers, module-integrated electronics from the watt to megawatt range.
    The TestLab Power Electronics is accredited by the DAkkS (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle) to investigate inverters up to 1.25 MW according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

In our power electronics laboratory, we offer the following services:

  • From consultations through to hardware and software development for renewable energy systems as well as energy systems in the fields of electric mobility, railway, aviation and industry electronics
  • Support in the selection of semiconductors, component evaluation and dimensioning of customer-specific power electronic modules
  • Simulation and design of inductive components and inductors
  • Development of control technology
  • Programing of DSPs and FPGAs
  • Construction of demonstrators and prototypes
  • Development of high performing analog and digital control circuits for converters with high switching frequencies
  • Characterization of semiconductor components (with discrete components through to semiconductor modules)
  • Testing and characterization of power electronic components and systems
