For applications with continuous demand, electric storage systems are required for all autonomous power supply systems. Examples are mobile devices (mobile phones, laptops), stationary technical devices (lights, signals), autonomous power systems for homes (Solar Home Systems, alpine huts), isoletad village and town power supply based on renewables and increasingly also for grid-connected applications. Battery systems play a key role in renewable energy systems, especially for PV and wind, due to their modularity and high energy efficiency. In addition, battery systems are also important for zero-emission mobility.

At Fraunhofer ISE, we focus on optimizing the battery system along the entire value chain from the cell through to the complete system. Depending on the application and user profile, the requirements on the battery system can be high. Batteries are required to operate safely. They may be exposed to extreme variations in temperature and are expected to have a long operating and cycle life. Further, batteries shall be fast charging and cost-effective.

With our comprehensive and long-term experience, innovative ideas and our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, we have the competence to support our clients in developing competitive products. We can assist them in selecting the suitable technology from the cell level up to the system level, including the development of the complete system and its integration into the application.

Our service facilities for Battery Systems for Stationary and Mobile Applications:

  • Tests and Characterization
    In our laboratory facilities covering an area of 400 m², we test battery and systems based on, e.g., Li-ion, lead-acid, NiMH battery cells as well as high temperature batteries and double layer capacitors. Our laboratory equipment includes battery test systems, impedance spectrometers, calorimeters, etc. We use these systems to perform tests in the climate chamber or in a water bath based on accredited standards or customized to our client’s needs.
  • Aging Investigations
    To investigate aging and perform lifetime analyses of batteries and battery systems, we offer long-time tests carried out over several months and more. These tests contain both an investigation of the cyclic lifetime as well as calendar aging. For this purpose, we have about 180 test circuits for the button cell up to large storage systems.
