Heat Transfer in Building Energy Systems

Innovative and customized materials and components for sorption technology and building services technology are key levers for reducing the specific energy and carbon dioxide levels on the equipment and system level.

Our current research focuses on developing novel adsorption materials and coating processes on different carriers with improved material and heat transfer properties. At the same time, we are concentrating on developing heat exchangers that require a minimum amount of material yet meet the maximum requirements with respect to surface area expansion/degree of forming, heat transfer and structural stability.

Our main fields of work are:

  • Development of highly porous adsorptions materials such as active coal, zeolitic and metal organic framework materials (MOFs) for applications in gas storage and separation, thermally driven heat pumps and chillers, heterogeneous catalyzers and sensor technology
  • Development of coating processes for applying different carrier structures
  • Development of heat exchangers with fast thermal response and reduced volume/material use by intentionally matching surface area expansion; applications are found in metal fibers, wire and woven structures as well as foams and sponges
  • Development of heat exchangers for the evaporation of water, propane and other conventional refrigerants
