Understanding Solar Thermal Energy Conversion (USTEC) is an online training course explaining how to use solar energy for heating. The course is hands-on training for the real life scenario taking the decision about buying a solar thermal energy conversion technology.

The course therefore starts with a comparison of conventional heating technologies (like gas, oil and coal) and renewable solutions for heating (heat pumps, photovoltaics, biomass, geothermal energy).

Subsequently the focus is on Solar Thermal Energy Conversion. Here we provide deep insights in the working principle, the components and materials used, the process of production and the design challenges of solar thermal systems.

We go through complete systems component by component understanding the functions and the specifics for different applications, like domestic hot water, heating, cooling or swimming pool heating.

Insights are given to the technical characteristics of those components, so that we can answer questions, like:

What is the efficiency of those systems?
How to calculate the costs?
What is the “best” solar thermal collector?
How to compare?

Within the 9 units well-structured in 27 lessons, you will find comprehensive information provided in an easy way, making it comfortable to study at home after work. Surplus interactive consulting hours are provided by regular web-meetings.

You will also be introduced to our mascot cat "Bastet" helping you to explore the knowledge provided.

Learning and Work Volume

The time exposure for CAS courses is about 10 hours per week.

For an optimum learning success and the awarding of the Certificate of Attendance or the Certificate of Advanced Studies CAS following performances have to be rendered:

Certificate of Attendance:

  • learning and consolidating the online provided educational material (e-lectures, recommended and further literature, etc.)
  • solving the online exercises (arithmetic problems and research tasks)
  • solving all self-tests
  • writing of a small professional article and give Peer-Feedback to the other articles
  • participating the forum discussions and online-meetings
  • reflecting learning experience
  • complete an evaluation

Certificate of Advanced Studies CAS (10 credit points CP*):

  • learning and consolidating the online provided educational material (e-lectures, recommended and further literature, etc.)
  • solving the online exercises (arithmetic problems and research tasks)
  • solving all self-tests
  • writing of a small professional article and give Peer-Feedback to the other articles
  • participating the forum discussions and online-meetings
  • reflecting learning experience
  • complete an evaluation
  • solving online exercises and self-test to prepare CAS examination
  • sitting the CAS exam

* 10 credit points correspond to 10 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). Credit Points CP can be recognized in a thematic adequate degree program. The provisions of the respective university, higher education institution or university of cooperative education apply for the recognition of the CP.

USTEC is designed for curious professionals from the heating and plumbing sector. Everyone is welcome, basic knowledge in technics is favorably.

18.05.2020 – 14.06.2020 exam preparation part and final CAS-exam

USTEC Certificate of Attendance (6 months online course): 1 650€

USTEC Certificate of Advanced Studies CAS with 10 credit points (6 months online course + 1 month exam preparation and written exam): 2 970 €
