Building Concepts, Analysis and Operation
Profile of Market Area
Using simulations during the early planning phases of non-residential building projects makes it possible to optimize the interplay between the building envelope and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) technology under given climate factors and usage requirements.
Suitable simulation techniques help us to identify potential weaknesses, cost reduction potential and optimization opportunities in building concepts and existing buildings at an early stage.
We develop tailor-made approaches to achieving "slimline buildings".
Our range of services covers monitoring and operation management, planning support during the development of building concepts and mobile short-time measurements on-site.
We offer planning, consultation and concept development services in the implementation of building projects for all matters relating to energy and user comfort.
We employ people from many different disciplines who work hand-in-hand to complete these tasks. With a team of architects, engineers, physicists, technical planners and industry representatives, Fraunhofer ISE plans buildings for today and develops building concepts for tomorrow.
Our strengths lie in the fields of light simulation, room climate analysis and the detailed modeling of complex energy supply systems. As well as applying our own simulation tools, we also work to refine them and develop them further for our customers.

Research Projects
With our solar building approach, our goal is to develop energy-efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply systems for buildings, both in industrialized nations and in threshold and developing countries.
We focus on the development of energy-efficient and sustainable building concepts, as well as on research into modern, user-friendly, practical technology in the fields of analysis and building operation.
Within this process, we not only examine the development of a building project and how a building project is created, but also consider it an indispensable part of our research work to incorporate the complete lifecycle of a building into our design concepts.
We believe that, faced with steadily rising electricity costs and increasingly scarce fossil fuels, energy efficiency and sustainable economic activity in the buildings sector are the future of the construction industry, and that they mark an important contribution on our part to society in general.
Building projects
The development of tools which can be applied directly by architects, planners and engineers in their day-to-day work and the consideration of the entire life cycle of a building are stated objectives in the field of solar building and are seen as vital principles of a sustainable approach. For us, energy efficiency and sustainability are centrally important in the planning of buildings, and therefore constitute a necessary contribution toward future-proof architecture and a more viable, forward-thinking society.
We adopt various approaches ranging from applied research, in the shape of consultations or studies on construction projects, to fundamental research in such areas as durability and life cycle assessment. In addition, we favor learning through research and involve students in our projects, thereby providing them with profound insights both into the subject matter we deal with and into our research methods.
Our work also focuses on the renovation of existing buildings. A reduction in the energy consumption of existing buildings is the dominating factor in all strategies aiming to reduce worldwide energy consumption and emissions. Structural renovation concepts are the starting point for all measures intended to increase energy efficiency. When calculated as part of an integrated renovation concept, additional costs for the appropriate use of solar technology are generally low.
