Profile of Business Area
Solar energy reaches the earth as electromagnetic radiation. We develop optical components and systems for efficiently converting solar radiation, which are suitable for transmitting, reflecting, absorbing, filtering, guiding or concentrating the incident radiation more effectively. We achieve this by coating or structuring large glass, plastic and metal surfaces.
We assist our customers in designing nano and microoptical systems, thin film multilayer systems and imaging and non-imaging elements. Our excellent equipment and facilities allow us to develop manufacturing processes which can be used in volume markets.
Fraunhofer ISE's optical expertise, which has mainly been developed for solar and building services engineering, is also exploited by our customers for other applications, such as lighting and display technology.
The efficient development of novel optical components and systems requires know-how in modeling, manufacturing and characterization. Motivated by the solar application of our developments we are well acquainted with wideband spectra and cost-efficient manufacturing technologies suitable for large surfaces. We design optical functions individually by structuring materials on a nano to millimeter scale.
