Profile of Market Area

Most solar cells available today consist of only one semiconductor material with one p-n junction. However, this does not allow the energy contained in the solar spectrum to be fully exploited. Accordingly, in the market area of novel solar cell concepts and photon management, we are developing concepts and technologies to overcome the main factors limiting the efficiency of conventional solar cells.

The main focus of our work is, on the one hand, to develop systems for photon management, and, on the other hand, to develop solar cells from quantum dot materials.

The aim of photon management is to increase efficiency by splitting or modifying the solar spectrum before the sunlight is absorbed by the solar cells. Silicon quantum dots are a promising material for the production of solar cells whose properties, such as the band gap, can be adjusted to meet the application in hand.

Our work also includes the development of new concepts, material development and characterization, as well as the production of complete solar cell systems with new functionalities.
